Hannah
Smeds-Davies
Born in Finland, Hannah grew up in a culture in which
hand-loom weaving was a familiar feature. Based on this firm foundation,
she has built up an enviable reputation as an accomplished designer of
woven fabrics.
Working
in many sectors and on every conceivable scale, she has produced small
hand-made items, major installations and even fabrics for industry. Her
skills have been in considerable demand in the woven textile industry,
where she has designed many highly successful commercial products that
have sold worldwide.
"My
designs for textiles and commissioned wall hangings have been installed
in domestic interiors and major public buildings in the UK, Europe, Scandinavia
and the United States," notes Hannah. "My knowledge of both
textiles and interior architecture enables me to collaborate with industry,
architects and interior designers to provide special designs for offices,
hotels, hospitals, shopping centres, airports and other projects. Similarly,
my woven textile designs have been used by many of the world's leading
contract furniture manufacturers."
Subtle and restrained, much of her work uses natural
materials such as unbleached wool and linen, occasionally interwoven with
flashes of coloured silks. She often weaves fine woven textured wall hangings
and rugs that illustrate her considered use of techniques and colours
to produce a combination of elegance and vibrancy that characterises her
work.
Hannah
is currently applying her new and inventive ideas and techniques to three
dimensional hangings and sculptures. More examples of her work can be
seen here.
